SHIVER
"A Winter in Colorado"
The frigid fury, brisk beauty, and passionate warmth of winter in the Colorado Rockies are the inspiration for the Denver Blue Knights 2009 production, "SHIVER."
Presented in five movements, "SHIVER" storms onto the field with "Whiteout," musically portrayed by Antonio Vivaldi’s Winter. "Whiteout" is a flurry of visual effects carried by the guard, punctuated by mountains of brass, virtuosic double-tonguing, and a wild percussive ram!
"Glide," featuring original music by staff composers, Russ Newbury and Jeff Ausdemore, showcases high velocity movement and drill wonderfully crafted by DCI Hall of Famer Marc Sylvester and choreographed by Tim Newburn and Rob Billings. This rapid paced opener gives one the sense of racing down mountains at break-neck speed, speed skating over frozen ponds, or boarding through a sea of white powder with the crisp mountain air in your face.
At the end of a long day, heaven is found sipping hot chocolate by the fireplace, images of skaters on moonlit ponds, framed through iced-over windowpanes, dancing in our minds. Stevie Nicks’ Landslide serves as the inspiration for "Fireside," enveloping us with warmth that can only be understood through true kinship with winter in Colorado.
The sudden thunder of the "Avalanche" reminds us of how cruel our mountains can be. The percussion engages in a "battle-style" feature as the rest of the corps violently crashes toward the front sideline, tossed by the fury and power of our virtual avalanche.
"Summit," announces the final triumphant echoes of the season, reminding us, once again, of the awesome force and grandeur of winter in the Colorado Rockies. Coronation, from the motion picture soundtrack from Stardust, closes the final chapter of the Blue Knights 2009 production, "SHIVER."
